The Robert A. Mathavious Memorial Trust will be formally launched on Friday, 11 September 2026, establishing a new platform to carry forward the extraordinary legacy of service of the late Dr. Robert A. Mathavious, OBE, one of the most consequential figures in the development of the British Virgin Islands.
The Trust has been established to support a cause of significant importance to the Virgin Islands community: improving the prevention, treatment and care of kidney disease. Its launch will bring together friends, colleagues, business leaders and members of the wider community in support of this important work.
The initiative is a fitting tribute to a man whose life was defined by service to the Virgin Islands.
Dr. Mathavious was widely regarded as one of the principal architects of the modern BVI financial services industry. Over a distinguished public service career spanning more than three decades, he served in several senior roles, including Financial Secretary, Director of Financial Services and, from 2002, as the founding Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the BVI Financial Services Commission.
His influence extended far beyond the institutions he led. Dr. Mathavious helped shape the legislative and regulatory framework underpinning the BVI's financial services industry and played a central role in guiding the jurisdiction through successive periods of international regulatory change.
His leadership, foresight and commitment to high regulatory standards contributed significantly to the growth, resilience and international standing of the BVI as a leading international financial centre.
Throughout his career, Dr. Mathavious was also known for his commitment to institution building, mentorship and the development of Virgin Islanders. His contribution helped create opportunities for generations of professionals and strengthened the foundations on which the Territory's financial services industry continues to operate.
In recognition of his contribution to the sector, the Financial Services Institute at H. Lavity Stoutt Community College was renamed the Robert Mathavious Institute for Financial Services, ensuring that his name remains closely associated with the education and development of future generations of financial services professionals.
The establishment of the Robert A. Mathavious Memorial Trust now provides an opportunity to extend that legacy of service into an area of profound importance to families across the Virgin Islands.
By focusing on the prevention, treatment and care of kidney disease, the Trust seeks to make a practical and lasting difference in the lives of people in the community while reflecting the same spirit of service, commitment and concern for the development of the Virgin Islands that defined Dr. Mathavious' life.
The formal launch luncheon will take place at Prime Restaurant in Road Town from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Friday, 11 September.
The Trust's Advancement Committee is inviting individuals, businesses and organisations to join in supporting the launch and helping to establish a strong foundation for the Trust's work.
Persons interested in purchasing tickets or obtaining further information about the launch should contact Jennifer Potter at trust@robertmathavious.com and 1-284-543-3514.
More than a memorial, the Trust represents a continuation of Dr. Mathavious' lifelong commitment to service.
Through the Robert A. Mathavious Memorial Trust, a legacy that helped shape the economic development of the British Virgin Islands will now be carried forward in another important way: improving health, supporting families and strengthening the community he served throughout his life.
