In collaboration with the Caribbean Examinations Council, the British Virgin Islands launched the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) Financial Services Syllabus at the Eileene L. Parsons Auditorium on 3 November.
In 2013, the Ministry of Education and Culture introduced financial services into the secondary schools curriculum in an effort to ensure the future sustainability of the industry through developing the interests, minds and talents of students in a manner that will sustain the BVI’s leadership in the financial services sector.
Shortly following the introduction of the local curriculum, the Ministry of Education and Culture initiated discussions with the Caribbean Examinations Council for the development of a Financial Services Syllabus at the CAPE level which was favourably received by several countries in the region.
With this encouragement, the Council took action, imploring technical experts from the BVI and around the region on the subject matter to ensure the development of the CAPE Financial Services Syllabus. Given the BVI’s initiative and leadership, the territory was asked to host the launching of the new Syllabus as it is customary for the Council to launch its new subjects after development.
In his remarks at the event, Minister for Education and Culture, Honourable Myron Walwyn said, “We must continue to advocate and support our people to acquire the requisite knowledge and skills to maintain and grow our industries. The success of our individual island states and our region depends on preparing the capacity of our citizens and residents to conduct our affairs on the global stage.”
Acting Premier, Dr. the Honourable Kedrick D. Pickering; Acting Chief Education Officer, Mrs. Connie George; Interim Executive Director of BVI Finance, Mrs. Lorna Smith, OBE; CXC Registrar, Mr. Glenroy Cumberbatch; and CXC Assistant Registrar, Dr. Annette Piper also delivered remarks at the launch.
