In a webinar highlighting the new FinTech programme being offered at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College Robert Mathavious Institute for Financial Services (HLSCC RMI), Professor Keith Carter of KBC Global Partners (Singapore) said one of the outcomes of the programme is to develop the BVI FinTech Ecosystem.
At the February 28 webinar, Professor Carter said, “The target is really to develop the BVI FinTech ecosystem, connect together, build relationships; and to be able to compete globally with local talent, as opposed to importing global talent that competes with local talent.”
Additionally, the programme which targets mid-career financial services practitioners with either strong business acumen or good technical skills, is also designed to enable FinTech transformation, especially in businesses in government, and establish new FinTech organisations.
The FinTech programme to support the development of FinTech professionals in the BVI is being offered by the HLSCC Robert Mathavious Institute for Financial Services in collaboration with BVI Finance and Professor Carter.
Dr. Richard Georges, President of the H Lavity Stoutt Community College, said the FinTech programme is in line with HLSCC’s strong commitment to developing high quality programming.
He stated, “Our first strategic objective is to pursue relevant and market driven academic short term alternative credentials and career technical education programmes, and of course this programme is a great example of one such programme that is responsive to those facets.”
Professor Carter’s presentation included the topics covered for the six month FinTech programme, along with a few testimonials from the last cohort of students of the FinTech programme. One testimonial shared during the presentation by Helen Marquis stated: “FinTech is an industry that can fuel the BVI economy for years to come.”
Ms. Marquis said she was introduced to technology like Power BI, where she could manipulate data, create visualizations and dashboards, and achieve results relatively quickly, adding, “I am more tech-savvy and applying the knowledge gained from the programme in my personal and work life.”
The FinTech programme begins May 15, with classes being held on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The programme includes individual and group work, and a capstone project.
