Managing Partner of Harneys Shanghai, Vicky Lord delved into the changing landscape of China’s economy post-pandemic and unveiled opportunities for BVI business during her presentation at a BVI Finance event on February 29, 2024.
In her presentation titled, “What’s happening in China- Insights for the BVI”, Vicky Lord illuminated key trends in post-COVID China, highlighting the record-breaking investments amidst geopolitical tensions and China's proactive efforts to stimulate Outward Direct Investment (ODI).
The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) emerged as a central theme, with its cumulative engagement surpassing USD 1 trillion and projections indicating further growth in renewable energy and infrastructure projects, particularly benefiting regions such as the Middle East, Africa, and the global south.
Furthermore, the presentation underscored China's domestic focus on renewable energy, particularly in Electric Vehicles (EVs) and solar panels and emphasised the opportunities for the BVI in facilitating Chinese investments due to its flexible structures and competitive pricing.
Attendees also gain valuable insights into the BVI's simplified Know Your Customer (KYC) process and cost-effective fund structures, positioning it as an attractive jurisdiction for Chinese investors. Additionally, the appeal of BVI for private client services, particularly in wealth preservation, was highlighted.
The attendees were also enthusiastic regarding BVI’s role in facilitating investments under the Belt and Road Initiative and its potential to foster mutual growth and cooperation between China and the BVI.
