Following widespread disruption as a result of Hurricane Irma, the BVI’s international business and finance centre has made demonstrable progress towards restoring business as usual.

Premier, Hon Dr D. Orlando Smith, OBE has started a series of meetings around Tortola to chart the way forward with business owners, as we begin the process of rebuilding the Territory following the devastation left in the wake of Hurricane Irma.

The following is a message from Premier and Minister for Finance Dr. the Honourable D. Orlando Smith, OBE.

In a statement following the devastating effects of Hurricane Irma, the British Virgin Islands’ (BVI) Premier Dr. the Hon. D. Orlando Smith, OBE has made it clear that restoration of the Islands economy will be a priority alongside ensuring requisite humanitarian aid.

The world is now aware of the destruction caused in BVI by Hurricane Irma, a record category 5 hurricane. Like all of us, I am heartbroken by the loss of homes and businesses but above all the loss of life the hurricane has wrought.

On 6 September, 2017 Hurricane Irma passed through the British Virgin Islands with reports indicating that the Territory suffered a direct hit.
